Where are screenings performed

Cervical screenings are available at all health care centres in Iceland.

Breast screenings are conducted at Brjóstamiðstöð (Breast centre) at Eiríksgata 5 in Reykjavík and at Akureyri‘s Hospital at Eyrarlandsvegur.

Breast screenings are also offered at certain locations in rural areas in the spring and at different places during the fall.

Screening for breast cancer and cervical cancer is a precautionary measure offered to women who don‘t have symptoms.

Women who do have symptoms are advised to see a doctor.

Is it time for your screening?

Twelve women from Icelandic society share their story at the photography exhibition “Is it time for your screening?” and accordingly encourage other women to participate in screening when they receive an invitation.

Read their stories.

Screening invitation

Women in Iceland are offered breast screenings and cervical screenings in accordance with directions from the Directorate of Health.

Women aged 40 to 69 years old are offered breast screenings every two years, and every three years when they are aged 70 to 74.

Women aged 23 to 29 are offered cervical screenings every three years, and every five years when they are aged 30 to 64.

If you do not wish to receive an invitation to screenings, you need to call the Cancer Screening Coordination Centre (SKS) and ask for an interview with a nurse. You can call on weekdays from 8:30 to 12:00 at 513-6700.
