Cervical screening open house

Women who have received an invitation can attend the health care center that best suits them, regardless of where they live, without booking an appointment in advance.

Women across the country, who have received an invitation to be screened and are aged 23 to 64 years, can book an appointment for cervical screening with a phone call to the health care centre that best suits them. 

Women who have received an invitation to be screened and live within the capital area can themselves book an appointment on My pages at heilsuvera.is

Appointments for breast screening

Women who have received an invitation for a breast examination, and are 40 to 74 years old, can make an appointment.


Appointments can be booked by calling 543-9560 between the hours of 9:00 and 15:30 all weekdays. Bookings can also be made via email at brjostaskimun@landspitali.is.

Where are screenings performed

Cervical screenings are available at all health care centres in Iceland.


Breast screenings are conducted at Brjóstamiðstöð (Breast centre) at Eiríksgata 5 in Reykjavík and at Akureyri‘s Hospital at Eyrarlandsvegur.

Breast screenings are also offered at certain locations in rural areas in the spring and at different places during the fall.

Screening for breast cancer and cervical cancer is a precautionary measure offered to women who don‘t have symptoms.

Women who do have symptoms are advised to see a doctor.

Screening invitation

Women in Iceland are offered breast screenings and cervical screenings in accordance with directions from the Directorate of Health.

 

Women aged 40 to 69 years old are offered breast screenings every two years, and every three years when they are aged 70 to 74.

 

Women aged 23 to 29 are offered cervical screenings every three years, and every five years when they are aged 30 to 64.

Decline screening invitation

If you wish not to receive invitations to screenings, you need to contact the Cancer Screening Coordination Center (SKS). You can contact us on weekdays between 8:30 and 12:00 by phone at 513-6700, or you can send an email to krabbameinsskimun@heilsugaeslan.is

 

If you are unsure whether to go in for screenings, for example because of previous operations, we advise you to seek medical advice and information from your doctor.


You can also seek advice from a nurse at the Coordination centre for cancer screenings.

Breast screening

Landspítali – The National University Hospital of Iceland has been entrusted with breast screenings in cooperation with Akureyri hospital.

 

In Reykjavík, screenings for breast cancer are conducted at Brjóstamiðstöð (Breast centre) which is located on the 3rd floor at Eiríksgata 5.

At Akureyri the service is located at Akureyri hospital at Eyrarlandsvegur, entrance C.          

Appointments for breast screening

Women who have received an invitation for a breast examination, and are 40 to 74 years old, can make an appointment.

 

Appointments for the entire country can be made by phone at 543-9560, every weekday between 9:00 and 15:30.

 

Bookings can also be made via email at brjostaskimun@landspitali.is.

In the fall of 2024, screenings were conducted in these places: Egilsstaðir, Eskifjörður, Hvolsvöllur, Ísafjörður, Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Reykjanesbær, Selfoss, Vík í Mýrdal, Vopnafjörður and Þórshöfn 

 

In the spring of 2024, screenings for breast cancer were offered at these locations: Blönduós, Húsavík, Sauðárkrókur, Vestmannaeyjar

Cervical screening

Cervical screenings are now conducted in all 19 health care centres in the capital area. In rural areas, screenings are conducted at local health care centres in the same way as in previous years.

 

Midwives and nurses, who have received special training, take a cell sample during the cervical examination.

 

The Primary Health Care in cooperation with Women's services at Landspítali and Akureyri hospital, will treat and monitor which women need further diagnosis and supervision due to certain cell changes (cytomorphosis) in the cervix.

Cervical screenings are conducted at the health care centres.

Women across the country, who have received an invitation to be screened and are aged 23 to 64 years, can book an appointment for cervical screening with a phone call to the health care centre that best suits them.

The general rule is that all women are offered a cervical screening every 3 years when they are between 23 and 29 years old and every 5 years when they are between 30 and 64 years old.

Women with reduced mobility

The best access for women with reduced mobility is at the health care centres in Glæsibæ, Hamraborg, Höfða, Kirkjusandi, Mosfellsumdæmi, Seltjarnarnesi og Vesturbæ. These stations have both good access to the station and a spacious facilities.

About the centre

The Co-ordination centre for cancer screenings (Samhæfingarstöð krabbameinsskimana) is located at Miðhraun 4, 210 Garðabær.

 

Breast screenings in the Greater Reykjavík Area take place in the Breast centre at Eiríksgata 5, 3rd floor. Akureyri Hospital is responsible for breast screenings in North Iceland. 

 

Cervical screenings take place at healthcare centres.
